The rapper, Marshall Bruce Mathers III in real life, was born on October 17, 1972 in Missouri. He is also known for his alter ego Slim Shady, which was the subject of some of his hit songs. He was born to a 15-year-old mom who was abandoned by his father when he was barely 18 months old. Thus, he was raised single-handedly by his mother. They had moved to various locations while he was growing up until they settled in Detroit.
The young Mathers had a genuine interest in storytelling prior to his discovery of hip hop. At nine, he was introduced to the hip hop genre by his uncle, Ronnie Polkinghorn. By the age of 14, he started performing amateur raps under the name ‘M&M,’ where the name Eminem was apparently derived. He joined the Bassmint Productions, a local hip hop group.
He attended Lincoln High School but frequently joined freestyle battles held at Osborn High School. He impressed underground hip hop fans back then despite his struggle to make a niche in an industry predominated by black people. By 17, he dropped school.
Interscope Records CEO Jimmy Iovine referred him to Dr.Dre, who immediately proceeded to work on his first major project, ‘The Slim Shady LP,’ released in 1999, when it rose to be among the most popular albums of the year.
In May 2000, ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’ was launched to become the fastest selling hip hop CD in the US recording history. Its first single ‘The Real Slim Shady’ paved the way for many other Eminem songs. Succeeding tracks never failed to impress like ‘The Way I Am,’ ‘My Name Is,’ and ‘Stan.’
His third CD ‘The Eminem Show’ conquered the charts in 2002. It was another commercial hit. It became so massive that it was certified 10 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The tracks in the album were most controversial because of the excessive use of profane and obscene language.
After releasing ‘Encore’ album in 2004, he decided to go on a hiatus. In 2005, speculations surfaced that he was bent on quitting the business. He bounced back in 2009 by releasing two albums by the beginning and end of that year. In 2010, his seventh CD ‘Recovery’ was launched. Unfortunately, the albums and tracks released upon his return were lackluster compared to his previous endeavors.
New Eminem songs are set to be launched in 2013 through the release of his eighth studio album. Dr. Dre has been working with him for the tracks in the CD. The album release is tentatively set on the Memorial Day. His followers and critics are looking forward to see if the controversial rapper still has that magic in him.
