There is no doubt that 2012 was the year of the new band Fun. As a new trio rocking the industry, the group has the distinction of having won two Grammy Awards. It became popular due to the award-winning Fun songs like ‘We Are Young,’ ‘Carry On,’ and ‘Some Nights.’ The New York City-based indie pop group recently bagged the Best New Artist and Song of the year awards from the Grammy’s in February 2013.

The band was organized by Nate Ruess, who was a member of the defunct group The Format. When his former band broke up in February 2008, Ruess asked his friends Jack Antonoff and Andrew Dost to join the new group. Within just a week, the trio produced their first demo song ‘Benson Hedges.’ Fun asked the former producer of The Format to produce their first album. Steven McDonald was enthusiastic and excited about the project.

Fun released its first album ‘Aim and Ignite’ in March 2008. It was recorded in Los Angeles. Most critics generated praises for the effort and even compared its theatrical appeal to the 2005 debut of the band Panic at the Disco. After that, the group became busier supporting concert tours of other artists. From then until the entire 2010, the band became occupied with its numerous gigs and tours.

After collaborating with Panic in the Disco for the song ‘C’Mon’ in May 2011, Fun released its second album ‘Some Nights.’ Its carrier single propelled the group to further popularity and commercial success. ‘We Are Young’ featured Janelle Monae. It was such a big hit that it became the band’s signature piece of all Fun songs. It was also used in several hit TV shows like Gossip Girl, Glee, 90210, and Chuck. It was even used as scoring for the advertisement of Apple Inc and Chevrolet. It was also used as the musical background of the trailer for the movie ‘This is 40.’

In March 2012, Fun was the first rock group to reach the No. 1 spot on Billboard Hot 100 after Nickelback, which reached the spot in December 2001 through its ‘How You Remind Me.’ The single also created history in terms of digital sales. It was the first song to be downloaded for more than 300,000 times within just seven weeks.

During the band’s guest performance at the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in June 2012, the audience instantly and genuinely liked them. In September that year, ‘Some Nights,’ the single, was used as background for The University of Alabama foot ball team’s National Championship video. In October, ‘Carry On’ became the group’s third song to get into the Billboard Hot 100.

During the recent 55th Grammy Awards, Fun was among the big winners. The group brought the house down when they performed on stage. Although Fun failed to bag the Record of the Year award, its members and fans are still proud that specific Fun songs snatched two awards. Prior to the awards night, music critics and magazines expected a good win for the group.
